Wealthy Migrants Welcomed to UK
Wealthy foreigners are being encouraged to migrate to the UK in an effort to make Britain a desirable destination for rich migrants.
After a move to restrict the number of non EU workers coming to live in the UK, home secretary Theresa May has said that high net worth individuals and wealth creators would be exempt from any cap.
Her comments come after the unveiling of a new immigration cap of 21,700 per year of skilled non EU workers becoming resident in the UK per year.
Critics say this will damage the economy, whilst making little impact to the goal of reducing migration to tens of thousands per year by 2015.
It is believed that people who invest more than £5 million in the UK will be given UK residency within 3 years and full citizenship within five.
Home office lawyer Kamal Rahman said such investors will only have to live in the UK for six months, down from the current nine month rule and becoming more aligned with the Canadian system.
Canada currently attracts 3000 wealthy foreign investors per year, which is ten times the amount the UK currently gains.
